WHAT IS SMARTPLUS?  

The need for goals to be SMART (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Results-focused, Timed) is well understood.  What is often forgotten is that to drive performance, goals need to be motivating (and that means more than simply being paid a bonus for meeting targets).

Fortunately the research into what makes goals motivating has been consistent for many decades. 

Mastery         gives us the opportunity for learning, to excel, for recognition

Autonomy     we have some control over HOW we deliver the goal

Purpose        we understand WHY it is important to the organisation, and ‘what’s in it for me’

The language we are using here comes from Dan Pink (his book ‘Drive – the truth about what motivates us’ is a good introduction to the subject).

Our focus is now on delivering SMARTPLUS goals that offer Mastery, Autonomy and Purpose, as well as the ideas contained in SMART.

  

The SMARTPLUS Goal Bank

Many organisations are under huge pressure to work faster, improve quality and deliver more value all at the same time.

The research over many years is clear: organisations that consistently set challenging goals with an essentially SMART approach, outperform those that don’t.  (For a summary of evidence based academic research contact our MD Hedda Bird).

 

Yet effective goal setting remains one of the weakest areas of management performance.

(Remember goal setting is much more than a KPI - Key Performance Indicator)

 

At 3C, we are all too aware of the challenges managers face in taking a concept that is easy to understand and applying it in practice: setting effective, stretching goals is hard work, and it takes a lot of time.  

 

We thought there must be a better way than running yet another training programme to help managers understand and use a SMART approach – lack of understanding is not the problem. (click here for more information about our SMARTPLUS training approach)

 

We analysed the strategic goals of a large number of organisations and found some consistent patterns: five kinds of goals that can be applied to each aspect of a balanced scorecard. 

 

Starting from this base, we have created a Goal Bank of generic SMARTPLUS goals that can be tailored to produce goals that are aligned to organisational strategies or vision and values.  This way, all goals set across the organisation are consistent and they are always aligned to the organisation’s needs.
